For the first time in his career, Brian Shrader felt he failed as a runner.

After winning 13 Arizona state championships in high school track and field and cross country, Shrader isn't used to disappointment.

But there he was at the NCAA cross country championships in November, riding a cart back to the Oregon tent after dropping out of the race, the pain in his back too difficult to overcome.
