We took some time to chat with Conor Lundy, a junior from Fordham Prep, who was one of The Armory’s most consistent performers this past indoor season.  Some of his highlights in the mile include taking second at the EmblemHealth Hispanic Games in 4:12.09, fourth at the NYRR Millrose Games in 4:12.97, eighth at New Balance Nationals Indoor in 4:14.01 and setting the CHSAA Intersectional Championships 3,200m meet record at 9:05.61. He also helped his distance medley relay and 4x800m relay teams to numerous top three finished throughout the season.

How did you become a runner?

I started running during my freshman year. Before then I played soccer and gaelic football and I think that had a lot to do with my fitness going into track and field.

What’s it like to be a part of the track and field team at Fordham Prep?

As far as the team goes, every kid on it is very motivated and I think we have a great coach in Mr. Febles, who takes over the excitement and brings that to our advantage. The workouts are designed to make us more ambitious afterwards, so that’s something great about Fordham Prep.

You and your team had a lot of great performances at The Armory this past indoor season. What was it like for you guys to be able to regularly compete here?

The Armory is probably the greatest place to run indoors, so to be able to use that facility almost every race is just awesome. You can definitely get some good times there. My teammates and I ran really well and were very pleased, so that’s one of the greatest things about training in the city.

What was your favorite race from this past indoor season?

There were definitely a lot. As a team I would have to say New Balance Nationals Indoor with my teammates Joseph Prunty, Chris Gray, Kyle Guzman in the DMR and Joe Prunty, Kyle Guzman, Conor Hughes in the 4x8. That was just a great atmosphere with the best competition in the US and probably the most fun to be a part of.

How did it feel to help your 4x800 team run 10:07 to take second at New Balance Nationals Indoor?

That was definitely the highlight of the indoor season and it was just great because it was our last opportunity. The rest of the kids on our relay, except for Conor Hughes, are seniors, so we were all really pumped to do well. Fordham Prep is known for having great relay teams and it’s just awesome that we can continue that tradition.

You guys are running the DMR at the upcoming Penn Relays. What are your goals for that race?

We definitely want to win. Fordham Prep has gotten second in the DMR a couple times in the past, so to bring it home for our coach would be just awesome. I think that’s definitely the goal.

Talk about the friendly rivalry you have between other CHSAA schools like Xavier.

Fordham and Xavier are very similar. We’re both Jesuit schools, so in the end we set aside the racing and are really good friends who just happen to go to different schools. Over the summer and sometimes on weekends I actually train with those guys. It’s just awesome that that’s something that track can provide that other sports can’t. At the end of the day we’re just runners and it doesn’t matter whom you train with. It’s competitive and about your own progression, so you can still be friends with your enemies.

What are your overall goals for the rest of the outdoor season?

Individually, I want to break the 4:10 barrier in the mile and dip under nine minutes for the 2-mile, which would be awesome. Maybe at Nationals go All-American in the mile or 2-mile and then I think we’re going to try to repeat in the 4x8. Maybe we can better the time and go for the win there.
