The December 6th and 7th Jim McKay Invitational was an indicator of good things to come for the ensuing 2014-15 indoor track and field season. Gairy Springer of Thomas Jefferson HS excited the crowd while narrowly outkicking Tomas Reimer, the reigning PSAL NYC Cross Country champion, to win the boys 1,000m in 2:38.32. Reimer would finish in 2:39.15. Paul Robeson HS took the top three spots in the boys 600m with Mergaran Poleon finishing first (1:23.38), Kiambu Gall second (1:23.51) and Jasheen Holloway third (1:23.93). Richard Rose of Boys and Girls HS (above) was the star of the boys sprints, running 34.97 to win the 300m. “Running at The Armory has always been a great experience,” said Rose after the race. “This year is my last year, so It would be amazing to get under 45 seconds at my hometown track.” The talented Clara Barton HS would claim a definitive win in the boys 4x800m in 8:26.03 with athletes Mawali Brown, Josue Caidor, Kemarni Mighty and Kareem Joseph. Joseph also won the boys 1600m in 4:37.21. Kalif Green of Boys and Girls HS won the boys long with a leap of 16-01.25 and Traivon Gilchrist of Thomas Jefferson HS took the boys triple jump with 45-2.00. For the boys teams, Thomas Jefferson HS would score the most of the day with 67 point. Susan Wagner HS took seconds with 45.5 points and Paul Robeson HS scored third with 32 points. The ladies of Cardozo HS made a statement in the girls 4x400m, running 3:56.22. “We all had a great day in our individual events and can’t wait for a successful season,” said Nia Lundy with her teammates Paris Peoples, Shaniqua Kirkpatrick and Djai Baker. Lundy also won the 600m in 1:37.99. Aaliya Wajid of Dewitt Clinton HS took the girls 1500m in 4:55.35 over Lili Tobias, who ran 5:01.50. Shayla Broughton of Medgar Evers HS cleared 5-6.00 to win the girls high jump and Simone Hendricks of Christopher HS won the girls long jump with 16-4.50. For the girls teams, Cardozo HS lead the day in scoring 60 points, while Townsend Harris HS scored 38 and Dewitt Clinton scored 37.
