Chicago Catholic League Championships (3/22)

Loyola Academy captured the team championship by 9 points over defending champion St. Ignatius. The Ramblers clinched the title by winning the 4 x 400 Meter Relay by two seconds over Brother Rice. They also captured the other two relays. It was one of the reasons why they left the Henry Crown Center with the team championship.

Loyola picked up only one individual event win. It came from Christian Swenson when he won the 3200 Meter Run. His time of 9:33.04 was a personal best and seven seconds ahead of runner-up Daniel Santino (St. Ignatius College Prep, Chicago).

Theodore Hopkins (Leo Catholic HS, Chicago) showed that he will be a force in the 1A sprints by capturing both the 55 Meter Dash as well as the 200 Meter Dash. In the 55, he won in a IL #10 6.55 which was four hundredths ahead of Marquise Peggs (Mt. Carmel HS, Chicago). Hopkins again held of Peggs to win the 200 (22.96-23.06).

Eric Walker (St. Rita HS, Chicago) won the 55 Meter High Hurdles in an IL #11 7.74. He was just ahead of Chris Hawkins and Conor Dunham (St. Ignatius Prep, Chicago) who were within a hundredth of a second of each other (7.86-7.87).

Sheldon Pierce (St. Ignatius Prep, Chicago) won the Triple Jump with a season’s best 44-7 ¼ (IL#9). Mike Monroe (Providence Catholic HS, New Lenox) prepared for a possible match up with Jonathan Wells next weekend in Bloomington with an easy win in the High Jump (6-5).

GCAC Championships (3/22)

St. Ignatius used their and field event strengths to defend their GCAC Championships Saturday afternoon at the University of Chicago. The Wolfpack scored 159.5 points, 23 ahead of Loyola Academy. Cydney Anderson was a key to her team’s success. She won the Long Jump with a seasonal best of 18-1 ¾ (IL #10). She also placed in the 55 Meter Dash (3rd)and the 200 Meter Dash (3rd).

The sprints belong to Anna Sloan (Trinity HS, River Forest) on this day. She won the 55 Meter Dash by six hundredths over Hannah Cohn (St. Ignatius Prep, Chicago). Solan’s time of 7.20 is currently #5 in the state. Sloan came back to win the 200 Meter Dash by almost a second (25.87, IL #12).

He came back a few minutes later and won the 55 Meter Dash edging Ben Andreas (Central HS, Naperville) by three hundredths of a second (6.50 – 6>53). That time is currently third in Illinois.
