HIGHLIGHTS

Class 5A GIRLS: In a great battle between four of the region’s best 8 teams (and two nationally ranked teams), US#16/SW#3 defending champ Monarch outscored #10/SW#2 Fort Collins, 91-98, with US#25/SW#5 Pine Creek a very close 3rd with 100. Pine Creek sr Heather Bates won with the meet’s best girls’ time, 18:16.5, more than 40 seconds ahead of Legacy soph Emma Gee(18:59.9). SW#8 Cherry Creek, without a finish from the state’s best runner, US#9 Jordyn Colter, was 8th with 249. Fort Collins was hurting as well, with #1 Erin Hooker as their 5th girl in 34th.

Class 5A BOYS: Even with no sub-17s on a tough day, US#20/SW#3 Mountain Vista prevailed with 103 pts, thanks to all five scoring in the top 30. They topped SW#7 Fairview’s 116, withCherry Creek 3rd with 198 and SW#8 Fort Collins 9th. Individually, Denver East runners went 1-2, with Ashi Geberkidane running the day’s best time at 16:21.7 and his brother, Cerake, 3rd in 16:38.1. In between, Liberty jr Clayson Shumway was 2nd at 16:30.7.

Class 4A: The Classical girls took yet another title, scoring 98 and with the day’s 4th-best average for girls. Coronado was 2nd with 127 and Air Academy 3rd with 131. A great individual battle saw Niwot jr Elise Cranny nipping Air Academy frosh Katie Rainsberger, 18:41.3 to 18:41.4 (2nd and 3rd best times of the meet). Coronado rolled to the boys title with 65, ahead of Cheyenne Mountain 106 and Thompson Valley 159. Ponderosa sr Eli Hemming won individually with 16:30.4.

Class 3A: In a very tight battle several teams deep, the Holy Family girls nipped Frontier Academy, 84-85. The individual race was a runaway, though, as Bayfield jr Eva-Lou Edwards won by more than a minute with 19:04.8. For the boys, University triumphed with 71, ahead of Peak-to-Peak’s 85 and four other teams within 20 points. Brush sr Anthony Thomas won with 16:48.8.

Class 2A: Just three score in this class, and the Lyons boys went 1-3-7 to win easily with 11 points to Telluride’s 27. Lyons’ state champ was a freshman, as amazing Paul Roberts had the day’s second best time with 16:25.0 – nearly 40 seconds clear of second. Hotchkiss won the girls race with 16 to Lyons’ 29, and Telluride sr Rachel Hampton 19:48.3.
