It's tough to get athletes to give your track and field team a shot when all you have to show them is a dirt field.
That was one of the challenges West Florida High track coach Kevin Rollins faced the past couple of years in recruiting people to the team, as his athletes shuttled to Woodham Middle for practices and worked out on what amounted to an empty lot when they stayed on campus.
No more, though, as he was able to procure the funds to have a new track and field facility built on campus, fitted with everything he needs to hold meets and help the team get better.
It's a welcome change for Rollins and his athletes, who can now walk to their own facility instead of packing up to head elsewhere for work, and the size of the team may be the most tangible early indication of the improvement.
