UNF Spring Break Invitational 2015

Post-race Highlights

Friday Night Distance Carnival

A rainy day at Hodges Stadium (like always its seems) on the campus of the Uniersity of North Florida saw some impressive performances on Friday night, with the 2K Steeplechase, 1600m and 3200m run.

The meet started with an unusual event in Florida, the 2K Steeplechase, with several dives in the water pits with  the girls race winner, Cypress Bay's Kaley Schmick, finishing with a time of 7:49.80, over a minute faster than the rest of the field.

In the Boys 2K Steeplechase we saw just about the same with a win from Charlie Le Grand in 6:47.93, beating second place by 24 seconds.

Later in the evening, the weather finally cleared up and made great conditions for the 1600m and 3200m.

In the girls 1600m, the favorite, Nease junior Yaranel Abreu came out with the win going 5:16.18 pulling along her teammate, Katie Potts, to a new PR in 5:17.94.

The boys 1600m had 4 guys sub 4:30 but the newly signed UNF Carlos Penaranda fom Pembroke Pines Charter seemingly making UNF Head Coach Pigg happy with the win of 4:22.6, just holding off Lake Mary's William Christian Aman with a time of 4:23.59.

With sun down, it was time for the girls 3200m with a win from Lake Mary's Daniela Urzua in 11:28.87.  Daniela ran the whole race by herself in the front and never gave up the lead.

Finally, it was on to the race of the night, the boys 3200m. This race was neck to neck with Robert E. Lee's Dominic Williams and Nease's Jonathan Jackson to just about the last couple of  meters.

Jackson's lead was a good 50 meters down the backstretch and looked to have it in the bag.

But here comes Williams during the last 150 with an incredible kick catching Jackson in the last 2 meters of the race and wins it with a time of 9:35.67.   Jackson who finished with a 9:35.82. Great races so far on day 1 of the UNF Spring Break Invitational  2015, lets see how day 2 unfolds with the remaining part  of the meet.
