Trinity-Valkyrie KY: Thomson turns tables on Burcham in battle of “Jacobs”Published by
Trinity-Valkyrie Results | Elites by SteveU LOUISVILLE – Holy Cross KY senior Jacob Thomson, a 2011 Foot Locker finalist and runner-up behind Jake Leingang in June’s NBNO 5,000, scored a big victory over another talented “Jacob” in his first big test of the 2012 harrier campaign. Midland Cabell WV senior Jacob Burcham came into this past Saturday’s Trinity-Valkyrie Invite as defending champ, having beaten Thomson here last year. But it was Thomson’s turn this time as he blasted a 14:52.60 to top Burcham’s 15:04.40. Broughton NC jr William Roberson (15:22.30) topped Lexington Catholic KY sr Nicholas Laureano (15:23.10) for third place. Thomson was third behind Burcham and Brock Baker TN here last year. He went on to take second at Foot Locker South and 19th at FL Finals to complete his junior season. He ran 8:58 for 3,200 in track twice last spring in addition to the NBNO 5k runner-up performance. Burcham didn’t compete in the XC post-season last fall, but his outstanding track season included a US#2 4:02.73 mile. MORE HIGHLIGHTS * US#23 (Marc Bloom’s preseason Super 25) St. Xavier KY boys edged US#13 Carmel IN for the title in the 50-team field, 79-81. Broughton NC was third at 112, Brentwood TN fourth at 134, then Brentwood Acad. TN fifth with 224. * US#10 Carmel IN dominated the 40-team girls field with 34 points, with US#20 Assumption KY second with 82 and Bowling Green KY third with 161. Carmel scored 4-5-6 and had five in the top 10. * Assumption won the individual battle, though, as juniors Bailey Davis and Katherine Receveur went 1-2 in 17:46.10 and 17:47.20.
