DURAND, Michigan — A wrong turn transformed a three-man race into a nine-man free-for-all Thursday at the Bob Bloomer County Classic cross country meet.

By the time the three front-runners backtracked and got back on course, they had plenty of company.

That company included Fenton senior Evan Bancroft, who launched a move with half a mile remaining to separate himself from the pack and become the surprise winner at Dutch Hollow Golf Club in Durand.
