Coral Reef XC Chasing Destiny

By: Noel ‘Bravo’ Francis for DyeStat Florida

One of the most anticipated seasons is upon us.  Competing in cross country at any level can be very exciting, challenging and rewarding. Cross Country entails a variety of tactics and teamwork, exercising patience and rhythm before unleashing a devastating breakaway individually or as a pack at just the right moment to seize an advantage and demoralize opponents.

Coral Reef Boys have finished runner-up in 4A the last 2 Seasons

Every year, harriers from the Sunshine State compete fiercely, often pushing their minds and bodies to the limit over some of the most grueling weather conditions found anywhere. It is not for the lazy, nor those who play the role of ‘rabbits’ lacking the will to carry on fighting and giving up easily. Experiments can sometimes backfire if not well planned and executed properly on the day. Cross Country is a test of will, skill, and character and without a doubt - stamina. Proper preparation just like in any other sport is a key ingredient for the successful cross country runner.

The 2015 Florida high school Cross Country season is expected to start off with a bang with preseason meets (Aug 17th - 22nd). It will certainly kick into high gear by the end of October with the Regional meets before the grand Florida High School Cross Country State Finals at Apalachee Regional Park (Tallahassee) on November 7, 2015.

One of the high school teams being touted as a real contender this season is Coral Reef Senior High from Miami, Florida.  Coach Mike Becker is the head coach of the Coral Reef High Cross Country teams.  Becker wears two hats; he is an educator in Mathematics and a track & field coach par excellence.

In an interview, Coach Mike Becker gave me insights on aspects of the sport as well as Coral Reef’s prospects for the new season.

What kind of advice would you give to a first-time Cross Country runner?   “To be patient, have fun, listen to one's body and learn the meaning of the concept dedication.”

Explain the benefits of Cross Country running on improving one’s mental and physical health.   “Cross Country is one of the purest sports on the planet.  When one runs Cross Country, he or she is in tune with both themselves and nature.” Also, Becker feels Cross Country does not require any special footwear and a good enough runner can compete barefooted.

How are preparations going for Coral Reef High this season?  “Very well, as we are presently in the mountains of North Carolina doing hill work and team bonding.” The coach chose this training base because of his conviction that the hills of the northern courses are harder for southern teams.

What are the strengths of your team?  “Assuming you mean the boys team, the strength is the senior team leadership.... 4 seniors and 3 returning top 20 runners from State.” The nucleus of the Coral Reef High Cross Country team includes Carlin Berryhill, Cameron Berryhill and Derwin Moultrie.

Can you give details about some of the special characteristics these leaders display among the group?  “They don't like to lose; they have high standards and care as much about each other as themselves. They are fearless.”

What is your training regime?  “One quality run each day, intended to prepare the athlete for the rigors of a difficult race.”

What are your projections for this team?  “They could be one of the top teams in the state in any classification.” The Coral Reef Senior High team likes to go out strong and dictate the pace. Coach Becker says his ideal race strategy to his charges is to stay up in the front and never look or think back.

Would you describe your team as aggressive, smart or adaptable?  “Adaptable... I adapt specific training regimens around "what works" with a specific group.  Of all the 30 year vets (I won a state championship at a different school in 1986) I am the most flexible coach I know.”

Becker placed great emphasis on teamwork and running together as a pack. He says, “It is vital, essential and the key to winning.”  He also believes that despite the physical attributes involved in Cross  Country running, it is the mental fortitude of the athlete that conquers all the elements. The coach highlighted the importance of knowing the course map when planning for a Cross Country event because it helps the athletes to gain confidence.

Big meets for the Coral Reef High Cross Country teams include the Pre-State and State championships at ARP in Tallahassee. They will be hoping to display brain power, strength, and endurance and gain success from these competitions. Interestingly, it has been 52 years since a public high school team from Miami has won a State Cross Country State title; since the day after President Kennedy was assassinated.  Victory in November would instantly elevate Coach Mike Becker and his team to folk hero status.

This season, high school Cross Country fans are in for a treat and could witness some keen competition among several of Florida’s top-ranked hills and valleys warriors during the fall season. The season officially starts on August 24th in earnest with a plethora of great meets already on the calendar.  Could Coral Reef High boys be one of the teams with a date with destiny?

They have no injury worries and will be coming to represent with pride and confidence. It is left to be seen if they will win or lose by a margin farther than shouting distance.
