Though no cases of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, have been reported, athletes have been struggling to stay healthy this season.

The flu virus has affected area volleyball and football teams.

Cross county runners, however, have been able to avoid problems. They have been the most healthy.

According to some area coaches, cross country running tends to prevent illness.

"I haven't heard of too many running teams getting sick," West Florida cross country coach Jeff Oliver said. "Maybe runners are just healthier. I don't know."

Runners' overall good health is one reason the flu seems to stay away from cross country teams. But all prep athletes, generally, stay in good health.

stay tuned! i'm hoping to do my master's thesis on the effects of exercise on immune function. my goal is to hopefully develop a protocol to follow when faced with a respiratory infection (those seem to plague endurance athletes the most). something that will hopefully help out by giving a template to follow to prevent illness, reduce down time, and speed recovery. this might be ambitious to say, but something that could be like daniels as far as laying out a program to follow.

as i learn more i'll certainly contribute here and in the nutrition forum. since i believe in free knowledge i'll certainly make the finished product available online.

Last year on my team there was a practice where, of 30 possible people, three showed up. The rest were in bed sick with swine flu. It was awful. First, after my roommate got sick, I moved into my RA (and teammate)'s room. Then he got sick, so I slept on a couch in the hallway for a couple nights. Fortunately, I never got sick. I was taking 10,000 mg of vitamin C a day, though! My pee probably cost me $5 a shot!

Our XC team in Dubuque, IA.definetly has a few members with the flu, and many on our team have been sick earlier in the season. Thankfully none of the top runners.
