The CIF State Cross Country Championships are over but the season goes on for a few select Inland area runners.

There are two events Saturday: Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore., and the Footlocker West Regionals at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

The Temecula Great Oak girls team that won the CIF-State Division 1 team title in record time last Saturday at Fresno’s Woodward Park, are scheduled to fly out to Portland in the morning,” according to Coach Doug Soles.

The “GO Girls” will be joined by Vista Murrieta senior Porter Reddish, whose fourth-place finish in 15 minutes, 14 seconds over the 5K course in Fresno was strong enough to earn the coveted Nike invite.

“He’s super excited to experience this,” Broncos coach Karen Candaele said of the 17-year-old senior who will be traveling alone.

This is the second time Great Oak has been invited to compete in the invitational race on the rugged Portland Meadows 5K course renown for its hay-bail jumps, undulating bunny slopes — aka, whoop-de-dos — and mud. The Wolfpack’s 2010 State Championship team also competed at the race known as NXN, finishing 13th.

“We’re looking to do a little better than that,” Soles said Saturday following the team’s trend-setting State Championship run of 90:45 that set at Division 1 course record and ranked among the five fastest team times ever regardless of division. “This is the ultimate goal, so you never know.”

Soles’ team of seniors Miranda Kewley, Kim McNamee and Alexis Messerly, juniors Haley Dorris, Ashley Helbig and Chrissy Calain, and sophomore Maiya Larsen have been ranked among the nation’s elite throughout the season.

“One thing we’ve been able to do all year is we’ve been able to hold on during a race,” Soles said. “If we can do that one more time, we’ll definitely have a chance at the podium (a top-3 finish).”
