Texas senior Tara Davis, the collegiate indoor record holder and world indoor leader in the women's long jump from her March 12 victory with a third-round leap of 22-9 (6.93m) at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on elevating to the No. 6 competitor in American indoor history and top 40 all-time globally. Davis also achieved the best indoor jump by an American female competitor since Brittney Reese produced an effort of 23-8.25 (7.22m) to win the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland, Ore. She reflects on her second-round performance of 22-0.25 (6.71m), the first time Davis had surpassed the 22-foot mark since June 2018 when she captured the U.S. Under-20 title in Bloomington, Ind. Davis revisits the technical aspects of her third-round leap and analyzes the necessary details in order to accomplish a 23-foot jump outdoors. She examines the significance of moving ahead of so many elite professional European athletes on the world indoor rankings this year, in addition to eclipsing the collegiate indoor record of 22-8 first established in 2002 by Elva Goulbourne of Auburn and equaled in 2012 by Whitney Gipson of Texas Christian. Davis reveals that after leaving Georgia and transferring to Texas, she nearly gave up competing in track and field as a result of injuries, along with contemplating not finishing school, and how she dealt with mental health challenges, before ultimately deciding that she had unfinished business in the NCAA system and her desire to be a champion again. She reveals the motivation gained from placing second to Ruth Usoro of Texas Tech at the Big 12 Indoor Championships and being edged for the title on the final jump of the event, and how she wanted to be aggressive from the outset of the Division 1 final to put the pressure on her fellow competitors. Davis shares the importance of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays returning March 25-27 to Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, and the significance of her competing at the event for the first time since 2018, and having the opportunity to long jump at the meet for the first time since she attended Agoura High in 2016.
