ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — A man has been hospitalized in critical condition after being hit in the head with a 12-pound shot put during a track and field event in suburban Chicago.

The Cahokia boys track team, a clear favorite for another state title in Class 2A, hammered the competition at the Herrin Sectional on Thursday.

Michael Wells has an opportunity to etch his name into the Missouri record books and be one of the most dominant sprinters to put his feet into the blocks.
