Boerne toasts its national-champion runners

By Mike Reeder - Contributing Writer/Northwest Weekly

The Boerne Champion varsity cross country team has added another title to its lengthy and historic list of achievements. From now on just call them “the toasts of the town.”

Two weeks after the team won the Nike Cross National Championships at Portland, Ore., the squad's seven runners and two coaches were honored at an appreciation rally Monday night in the Champion gym that had all the trappings of a political convention and a pep rally combined.

Jay Tope of SA.Sports.com introduced each runner as he entered the gym through the inflatable tunnel normally reserved for Friday night football. All the while, fans clapped and cheered and the Champion band shook the walls with music.

Boerne Mayor Pro-Tem Jacques DuBose presented each runner and their coaches, Dave Fulkerson and Erin Bradley, with a proclamation citing the team for its accomplishments and praising its “commitment to excellence.”

Charger Athletic Booster Club President Jim Davis credited them with doing more to “create tradition and excitement” about the new school than anything his group had been able to accomplish in the Champion's short two-year history.

School Board President Alan Rich and BISD Superintendent John Kelly each extolled the “dedication, sacrifice and teamwork” that went into winning every race the squad entered this season. Those first-place finishes included repeat district and regional UIL championships, a second consecutive UIL state title, a Nike South Regional title and the Nike national championship.

Champion Principal David Stelmazewski said the squad had given him a story about setting and achieving goals that he will be telling students “for years to come.” BISD Athletic Director Stan Leech lauded the community for supporting the program at every level and praised Fulkerson and Bradley for developing “not only the best team in Texas but the best team in the nation.”

When it came his turn to speak, Fulkerson said he knew this year's runners were special, but he only realized how special they were after watching them dominate an early season race that included teams from all around the state and nation.

“It didn't dawn on me until I was driving back that day,” Fulkerson said. “I went from telling people that they're a really good team to telling people you owe it to yourself to come out and watch them run, because these guys are the best high school cross country team I've ever seen.”

That's high praise from a coach whose teams have won multiple state titles, but it's praise supported by an undeniable record of achievement. The cheers will eventually fade, but the things Nathan Christianson, Colby McCune, Will Mack. Ryan Miller, Ethan Doherty, Moses Luevano and Travis Barclay accomplished this season will live forever in Boerne sports history.
