Hall takes down 2 records at New Englands

Kate Hall of Lake Region has proven to be a one-of-a-kind talent in Maine but on Friday at the New England Interscholastic Indoor Championships in Boston, she showed that she's one of the best ever in the entire region.

Hall, a senior who has committed to Iowa State, broke New England all-time best marks in the 55-meter dash (6.95 seconds) and the long jump (20-6) to the delight and amazement of fans at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Hall's improvement in the long jump makes her the favorite going into the New Balance Nationals Indoor meet in two weeks in New York. Last year she jumped 19-11 for second place.

The best of the best from six states -- Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine -- competed for regional and state rights and produced a variety of nationally signficant performances.

Alex Ostberg of Darien CT, a week after getting beat to the finish line on three occasions at the CIAC Indoor Championships, put all of his effort into a big 2-mile and delivered with 9:00.58. It was just a bit off the meet record set by Christian Alvarado (9:00.29) a year ago. Eric Van der Els of Brien McMahon CT (9:08.67) and teammate Armstrong Noonan (9:09.15) ran US#2 and #3.

Hannah DeBalsi of Staples CT ran virtually unopposed in the girls' 2-mile and finished in 10:26.09 for her third consecutive victory in the event. After going through the mile in 5:00, DeBalsi wasn't able to run quite as fast as she wanted. But it was still a good effort and a US#1.

Joe Luongo of St. John's Prep MA ran within .01 seconds of the time he posted to win the 600 meters at the Massachusetts All-State meet a week earlier (1:19.38). He ranks US#2 with 1:18.84.

P.J. Garmon of Billerica MA ran US#4 2:26.97 but had his eye on Said Ahmed's 2001 New England record of 2:25.14. Spencer Brown of Wilton CT ran US#7 2:27.51.

La Salle RI flexed its collective muscles in the mile with a 1-2-3 sweep of Matt Bouthilette, David Principe Jr and Dan Paiva all runnning 4:17.25 and 4:18.04. Together with Jack Salisbury, who competed in the 1,000, this is a group that could do something special at nationals in the 4xmile.

In a photo finish of the boys 55 hurdles, Kevin Saccone of Old Rochester MA edged Sebastian Silveira of Andover after both were timed in US#11 7.45 seconds.

A week after losing to Weston at the CT state meet, Windsor's boys turned the tables in the 4x200 and ran a very fast US#7 1:29.23 that broke the New England record. Weston hot on their heels in US#10 1:29.46.

Simeon Okoro of Weston won the 300 (34.89) but came up just short on the anchor leg in both the 4x200 and 4x400s.

Sierra Irvin of Hingham MA anchored her team to a close win over hard-charging Hope RI in the 4x200 and also won the 300 meters in 39.48.

Amy Piccolo of Ursuline Academy MA won the 600 in 1:35.13, about a second off her best time of the season.

Danae Rivers of Wilbur Cross CT, the star of her state meet a week earlier, broke the Connecticut record in the 1,000 with US#5 2:49.68.

Eliza Rego of La Salle RI broke the meet record in the mile with US#6 4:52.83.

Danae Bucci of Bedford MA cleared US#2 5-9 and has seen her PR progress rapidly this season. She began the season with a best of 5-3. On Friday, she concluded the competition by taking three attempts at a possible new meet record with the bar placed at 5-10.50.

The Lincoln-Sudbury MA girls got the meet rolling with a US#5 9:16.25 in the 4x800 that included a 2:11 carry for anchor Ariel Keklak.
