For the most part, this was a weekend of transition in high school cross country. There were still some big invitationals, but many states have moved beyond -- into county championships, conference, regionals, sectionals, districts -- or whatever machinery winnows down the state qualifiers. The season is coming to an end for many teams.

State championships happen this week in Utah (Wednesday), Nebraska (Friday), and then Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Vermont on Saturday. The small schools in Oklahoma have a state meet. The class championships in New Hampshire are coming as well. STATE MEET INDEX

So there's a lot going on all at once -- especially this week -- and we'll try to stay on top of all of it.

Before we delve into the weekend past, it's worth noting that Monday brings about the expected debut of Hannah DeBalsi of Staples CT, preseason US#1, who will run at the FCIAC meet, which was delayed from last Thursday because of weather.

Let's start in the East, where there was a thrilling showdown in the boys race at the Brown Invitational in Rhode Island (tip of the cap to meet directors Bob and Anne Rothenberg). Marco Pompilj of Collegiate (Manhattan) stepped up with a big 14:56.06 for 5K to beat Edwin Rutto of St. Benedict's (14:57.20).

And Patrick Tucker led St. Anthony's NY to a very impressive 39 points with a top five averaging 15:36.6.

Shannon Murdock of Exeter NH won the girls race in 17:53.27 and was nine seconds clear at the finish line. Sachem East won the girls team title. RESULTS

In California, at the Orange County Championships, Brea Olinda junior Austin Tamagno broke his third consecutive class record at the meet. He ran 15:01 as a freshman for seventh place and 14:33 as a sophomore for second place in 2013. On Saturday, he ran 14:35 and won by 15 seconds.

In a very competitive girls sweepstakes race, Kelsey Carroll of San Clemente got the win in 17:27 followed by Ashley Licata of Capistrano Valley (17:28) and Stephanie Ortega of Segerstrom (17:29). RESULTS | DyeStatCAL

In Indiana, regional meets took place across the state. Carmel's boys and girls swept the team titles at the Noblesville Regional. And in the Elkhart Central Regional, Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka won for the second weekend in a row, this time by about eight seconds in 17:57.

In Arizona, at the Rattler Invitational, Rio Rico's Carlos Villareal sped to another quick time. He ran 14:50.6 for three miles in Marana. Gila Ridge won the boys team title.

Bridgette Doucet of Canyon Del Oro ran 17:07 to win the girls race and Xavier Prep's scoring five all finished between 18:28 and 19:03. RESULTS

In Virginia, Andrew Hunter of Loudoun Valley and Weini Kelati of Heritage, both US Top-10 performers, won at the Third Battle Invitational in Winchester. Hunter went sub-15 for 5K with 14:54 and won by more than 30 seconds. Kelati ran 17:31 and won by 20 seconds. RESULTS

Meanwhile, at the Milestat Invitational, the Maggie Walker boys and James Madison girls collected team titles and the individual spoils belonged to E.C. Glass. Peter Seufer won the boys varsity race in 15:30 and Libby Davidson ran 18:00 for a big win on the girls side. RESULTS

In Maryland, at the Montgomery County Championships, Diego Zarate of Northwest won a photo finish in the 5K boys race, clocking 15:47.47 and Evan Woods of Walt Whitman was second in 15:47.69.

Nora McUmber of Bethesda-Chevy Chase has no such stresses in the girls race, winning it in 18:12.45. RESULTS

In Florida, it was a big day for the home team at the Holy Trinity Invitational in Melbourne. Shelby Smith ran 18:05 to win the girls varsity race and Andrew Cacciatore ran 15:38 to win the boys race. The schools swept the team titles as well. RESULTS | More coverage at Distance Preps

In Massachusetts, at the MSTCA Twilight Invitational, P.J. Garmon of Billerica won the Div 1 boys race with 15:36.2 for a two-second win at Falmouth. Saint John's won the team title with 95 points.

Ariel Keklak of Lincoln-Sudbury won the girls D1 race in 18:06.6. Bishop Feehan won the team title with 93 points, while Lincoln-Sudbury was next with 139. RESULTS

In Illlinois, there were numerous conference championships. Check out DyeStatIL for complete coverage of the weekend there.
