Winter Park's John Lindsey commits to Georgia

DistancePreps.com: Why did you ultimately decide on the Georgia Bulldogs?

John Lindsey: I chose Georgia because it is no doubt the most well rounded school that I have come across. Athens is a town full of culture and life, where you only get good vibes. Ultimately I chose the University of Georgia because of what the school has to offer, not only with running, but the great balance it has between academics, culture, and tradition. It is a Cherry on top that I will be able to run for arguably one of the best running programs in the nation; a program that ranks highly in both the NCAA and the SEC. I am looking forward to the competition and challenges that await me. GO DAWGS!!!

DistancePreps.com: Was it stressful or smooth as silk making a college decision?

John Lindsey:  Georgia was always a school I wanted to attend, but was not the only school I considered. I looked at many schools around Florida, but in the end it came down to UNF, Rice University, and Georgia. After visiting Rice University in Houston, Texas, the decision process started. After getting recruiting calls from coach Cunniff, I was faced with by far the hardest decision in my life. It was hard to pass up some wonderful coaching and a prestigious Education at Rice, but I saw too many aspects about UGA that I just could not turn down. When it all came down to the end, I learned that although outside opinions are good to take into account, you have to do what YOU want to do. I now have no doubt that Georgia is where I want to spend my next four years.

DistancePreps.com:  You've shown great range as a Wildcat, what's your favorite event?

John Lindsey:  This is an interesting question, because although I focus on the 800-1600, I love to lace up the spikes and run against some shorter distance guys. Running the 4x4 is probably my favorite team event because its super exiting, adrenaline is rushing, and a lot of the times the team scores comes down to it. My favorite meet of the year was a Trinity prep meet earlier in the season when I got to Triple Jump and run the 300 hurdles! I joke about it with my team and coaches, but I think experimenting with races that you don’t typically run is only good for you and your range. I train with 400 runners and it helps me tremendously in the 800 and up. In college I will probably just stick to the 1500/steeplechase, so it’s fun to try new things now.

DistancePreps.com:  As your senior season winds down, what do you still want to accomplish?

John Lindsey:  I haven’t decided what I am going to run post season yet, but whatever it is, I want to place, and place high at states. Now that the college decision is in, I’m going to focus on running for place and see who I can beat. I’ve learned a lot of lessons in high school running, one of them being that you should always run to beat people, and hope that the race you’re in will take you to a fast time.

DistancePreps.com: What do you plan on studying while you're at Georgia?

John Lindsey:  For now I am undecided, but I’m going to Georgia with a declared major in geography. I’m sure I will change my mind multiple times in the next couple years though.

DistancePreps.com:  What's your favorite memory so far.

John Lindsey: My favorite memory so far was without a doubt breaking the school record in the 4x800m relay my junior year with Billy Anguish, Brylan Slay, and Josh Williams. It was bittersweet because we ran a 7:42 but only managed to place third at states. It meant more than just a state medal to me and Billy though; it meant family bragging rights as well. Our brothers Donny Anguish and Scott Lindsey ran together back in the early 2000s at Winter Park and held the 4x800 school record at the time. Beating their record and making our mark in history was an awesome experience.
