Despite losing all but two runners from last year’s push to a second straight Class 4A championship, along with a Nike national title, Boerne Champion still has hopes of another banner season. The Chargers may not have the dominant appearance they had the previous two years, but the presence of seniors Travis Barclay and Josh Hernandez is a good place to start the rebuilding. [...] Barclay finished second to teammate Nathan Christianson at last year’s 4A state meet, while Hernandez played a solid role in helping Champion to its district and Region IV titles. The newcomers making their debut may not have varsity experience, but they made an impression on coach Dave Fulkerson after recording a perfect score during their junior varsity district-championship showing last season. In District 27-5A, state qualifier Grace Kohler hopes to defend her individual league crown and help Brandeis to a second straight team title.
