2015 Wingfoot XC Classic to be Held on Saturday, September 26 in Cartersville

Press Release

ATLANTA – April 1, 2015 – Expanding on its longstanding commitment to grassroots running, Atlanta Track Club announced today that it will launch a new cross country event this fall. The 2015 Wingfoot XC Classic will be held on Saturday, September 26 at Sam Smith Park in Cartersville, Georgia.

The inaugural Wingfoot XC Classic will feature varying race distances up to a 5K on surfaces such as grass, dirt and gravel. The course will be a unique single loop with traditional European cross country elements such as hay bales or logs. The event is open to middle school and high school cross country teams as well as the general public.

“Our commitment to high school running dates back to 1964 and Atlanta Track Club’s beginnings,” said Rich Kenah, Atlanta Track Club’s executive director. “The Wingfoot XC Classic will not only provide a fun, friendly competition between middle and high school athletes, but also introduce members of our community to a type of running they may have never experienced.”

Middle school and high school coaches can register their cross country teams for the Wingfoot XC Classic through Tuesday, September 1 at ga.milesplit.com. Along with regular competition divisions, teams will receive a cumulative score across their boys and girls varsity and junior varsity teams. The winner will be awarded the Wingfoot Cup and earn a tent in the VIP area for the 2016 event as they defend their title.

In addition to the Wingfoot Cup, the top three teams will also receive awards. The top 21 individual finishers in each race will receive a medal, while the top 10 finishers in the varsity races will receive a T-shirt and a medal.

Members of the community ages 8 and older will also be able to take part in the Wingfoot XC Classic in support of their participating schools. Beginning on August 19, parents, family members and friends of the student athletes can register for the community race at atlantatrackclub.org. The event is part of Atlanta Track Club’s 2015 Grand Prix Series; it is free to Atlanta Track Club members and $15 for the general public. Participants will select a school to represent during online registration and the school with the most registrants by 11:59 p.m. on September 23 will earn a tent in the VIP area for the 2015 event complete with snacks and a private bathroom.
