Chapman, Hart Own Day One of Junior Olympics

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Timara Chapman (Raleigh, N.C.) and Bobby Hart (Manchester, N.J.) won the girls’ and boys’ 13-14 pentathlon, respectively, in impressive displays of endurance to kick off the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The Junior Olympic program is a series of meets progressing from preliminary, association, regional and national meets. Athletes compete in two-year age groups ranging from eight and under to 18-years-old.

The free, live online broadcast of the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships lives on USATF.tv. The broadcast beings with the opening ceremony on July 23 at 7 p.m. and runs through July 28. Coverage of the first two days will be available on-demand at USATF.tv. USATF.tv is the home for original programming and on-demand videos of all the 2013 USATF Championships Series, youth and masters events.

With a 100m remaining in the 800m race of the girls’ 13-14 pentathlon, Chapman summoned all her remaining strength to win the final event of the pentathlon in 2:32.62. The come-from-behind victory gave Chapman a total of 3,100 points enough to win the pentathlon. The 800m was her only individual win, while she finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.79.

Hart edged out a six-point victory in the boys’ 13-14 pentathlon with a total of 2,905 points. Hart’s best finish in any individual event was second in the long jump, posting a mark of 5.62m/18-05.25. Hart will also compete in the long jump and triple jump later this week.

Another standout performance came in the 9-10 boys’ 1500m race walk, Christopher Renn (Fair Lawn, N.J.) dominated the field in an impressive display. Renn crossed the line in 9:14.09, one minute and 18 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.
